Tumut’s Montreal Theatre is one of the few surviving 1920’s picture theatres in Australia designed in the modernistic style with art deco elements.
The name ‘Montreal’ is an anagram of the name of local draper J.J. Learmont, who ordered the design and construction of the theatre after seeing similar in Sydney.
Opened to the public in 1930, it closed as a commercial venue in 1992, however was resurrected in 1995 by the local community, and today is completely operated by volunteers.
The Montreal Theatre on Russell Street offers Tumut locals, as well as those visiting the Snowy Mountains region on rural retreats or luxury escapes the chance to enjoy an evening of theatre or music, and often plays host to seminars, concerts, book launches and art shows also.
